Smells Like Teen Spirit, Again

birks

I was browsing the used books in my neighborhood thrift shop when a young woman came in. Something caught her eye and she leapt across the store to the women’s clothing section, waving her greeting to the guy behind the counter on her way.

“No!” she exclaimed when she finally laid her hands on the object of her attention. “It’s a coat. I thought it was a flannel. I need a flannel.” Her shoulders drooped and she moved back to chat with the counter guy, leaving the red and black plaid pea coat on the rack.

Yep — the 90s are back. Doc Martens. High waisted jeans. Crop tops. Overalls. Flannel. I have to admit, it’s a little surreal to see the things I wore in college come back around. There’s a little bit of What!? Trends don’t cycle that fast it takes at least 20 years … oh, right …  going on in my head.

But you know what else was super popular in the 90’s? The books I love to read. The ones that first made me wonder if I might have stories to tell. The ones I ultimately ended up writing. Lighthearted stories of modern women (aka chick lit novels) had their time in the sun in the latter part of the decade. So even though it’s a little hard for me to believe it’s time for 90’s trends to cycle through again, I’m dusting off my Birkenstocks and welcoming them with open arms. I think I’ll even invite them over for a Zima (with a Jolly Rancher in it, of course).

Side note to the young woman in need of flannel: try your Dad’s closet, that’s  were the best flannel always came from.

  1. Rock those Birks! And yes, there’s flannel in Dad’s closet. I periodically have to smack my daughter’s hand to keep her from stealing it!

If nothing else, it was a comfortable decade – long flannel shirts and shoes that were orthopedic before they were trendy. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
