The Dress

photo 1-3

I want to sell my wedding dress.

When I mention this to people they are either horrified or they totally understand.  There is no lukewarm on this.  Never has anyone just shrugged and said “huh, well, whatever.”

So for anyone who read the first sentence above and felt horrified, let me debunk a few myths.  These are NOT the reasons why I want to sell my wedding dress:

  • I don’t want to be married anymore.  This could not be further from the truth.  Quite happily married, thanks.
  • I had a terrible wedding day and want to scour anything that reminds me of it from my life.  Nope.  If we were getting married today (nearly 11 years later) would we do some things differently?  Probably.  Did we do exactly what was right for us at the time? Absolutely, yes.
  • I need the money.  Well, okay a little extra cash is always nice, but (thankfully) this isn’t an act of desperation.
  • I’m completely unsentimental, I don’t attach feelings to inanimate objects.  Umm… a dear friend and I mail small stuffed animals we made as kids back and forth between England and the US. So no, just no.

This IS the reason I want to sell my wedding dress:

  • It’s taking up a lot of space in my closet.

That’s it.  Really.  I love the dress.  I loved shopping for it with my mom.  I love the man I married in it.  I have two huge albums of lovely photos and a reel of movies in my head.  I look at those pictures sometimes, but I never go unzip that garment bag and stare at my dress.  Which simply means it’s time for it to find a new home and create lovely new memories.  That is all.

Psst...Over Here!

  1. Seriously, you should wear it one last time. To the Jefferson Hotel during happy hour. I will wear a bridesmaid dress I have. We’ll tell everyone that you were ditched at the alter and we’ll get free drinks.

  2. I have mine too and have not looked at it in 22 years! It also takes up a lot of space as it is in a very big box. I have often thought about selling it as I have no daughters and would rather someone who needs one on a budget to have one. Can I join you at the Jefferson?

Yes! I do love the thought of someone else using the dress. And yes, we could do two jilted bride nights! I’ve got several bridesmaid dresses in that closet too.
