In the Details

They say the devil is in the details, but I’m going to disagree– unless the devil is awesome and magical. Because I’m pretty sure that it is beauty that is in the details. I had the privilege of being invited to an amazing Fourth of July party last weekend. My friends won exclusive access to a park located in the heart of the city through a charity auction. It was just our small group and the park staff and their families there.

While the fireworks proved elusive to photograph, the details of the celebration and the historic house on the property were out in all their glory. Especially my friend Sarah’s amazing attention to the little things: festive citronella candles, straws that looked like fireworks, tiny flags to wave, and Jimi Hendrix cued up in the playlist just in time for the fireworks. (Also planets converging, which I don’t think Sarah ordered up… but you never know.) Here are just a few of the beautiful details of the evening:

  1. I just had a super-vicarious time with you! Now tell us what was on the menu. At my house we had the July 4th classics with a l’il spin — grilled organic burgers on whole wheat with pepper jack cheese, baked black beans with corn and chipotles, cucumber salad, and apple pie with cracked vanilla bean ice cream. And we rinsed it down with Crabbie’s ginger beer. Oh my God, it’s official. I’m obsessed with food…

That sounds fabulous! I love your twists on the classics!

We had make your own sandwiches, so I had a jalapeno pimento cheese sandwich. Then sides of pasta salad (with bacon!), cucumber feta salad, fruit and a brownie (with chunks of chocolate in it! to top things off. I ate it so fast there was no time for pictures!

      1. Thanks! Haha, if it’s so delicious you can’t take pictures, it has to be mmmmmm. Jalapeno pimento cheese sounds positively smashing. Why have I not tried that? And why have I not, prior to this summer feasting season, heard of cucumber salad with cheese? You’re the third person who has recently mentioned cucumber salad containing some form of cheese. I’ve gotta get out from under this rock!
